Según el Índice de Silicon Valley de Joint Venture (Silicon Valley Network) el efecto Medici es la clave de las subidas del 4,1% en la productividad en el Silicon Valley el último año (1,9% para todo EEUU). Bueno, esta es mi conclusión al ver los datos que cita El País. El efecto Medici es la consecuencia de juntar personas de origenes distintos (tanto geográficos como profesionales como personales en general) en un mismo sitio. En los espacios de intersección de estas personas suceden explosiones de creatividad e innovación. Por esto en uno de mis posts sobre la anticipación, buscar el efecto Medici era una de las ocho características del que se anticipa. El elemento más importante [del estudio] es la creciente apertura de la región al mundo. Con un 36% de residentes nacidos en el extranjero, San José pasó delante de Los Ángeles como segunda ciudad más cosmopolita de EE UU (detrás de Miami).

Un 55% de los empleos científicos y tecnológicos están ocupados por gente nacida fuera. Un 48% de la población local habla en casa un idioma diferente al inglés.

Los nuevos emprendedores inmigrantes de América, un estudio de investigadores de las universidades de Duke y California-Berkeley muestra que un 52% de las start-ups de Silicon Valley cuentan con, por lo menos, un inmigrante entre sus fundadores más relevantes (25% a nivel nacional). Las patentes depositadas por equipos mixtos (gente del valle y extranjeros, en particular de India, China, Italia, Hong Kong, Finlandia y Taiwán) fueron seis veces más numerosas en 2005 que en 1993.

Ray Kurzweil predicts that by 2029, the WebOS will be parallel to the human brain:

By 2029, sufficient computation to simulate the entire human brain, which I estimate at about 1016 (10 million billion) calculations per second (cps), will cost about a dollar. By that time, intelligent machines will combine the subtle and supple skills that humans now excel in (essentially our powers of pattern recognition) with ways in which machines are already superior, such as remembering trillions of facts accurately, searching quickly through vast databases, and downloading skills and knowledge.

But this will not be an alien invasion of intelligent machines. It will be an expression of our own civilization, as we have always used our technology to extend our physical and mental reach. We will merge with this technology by sending intelligent nanobots (blood-cell-sized computerized robots) into our brains through the capillaries to intimately interact with our biological neurons. If this scenario sounds very futuristic, I would point out that we already have blood-cell-sized devices that are performing sophisticated therapeutic functions in animals, such as curing Type I diabetes and identifying and destroying cancer cells.

Ya está a disposición el video de la charla que dió en TED Charles Leadbeater, autor de We Think y gurú de moda (merecidamente) de la llamada innovación masiva. Tanto de él como de la innovación y la colaboración masiva ya hace tiempo que hablamos en este blog, porqué pienso que el “mass” en mass innovation no es otro adjetivo más que se le añade a la innovación sino que significa un salto cualitativo y de cambio de paradigma de cómo se innova.

Y aunque Jobs lo diga por interés, estoy totalmente de acuerdo con él. La industria discográfica está librando una batalla de una guerra que sabe que no ganará. Sólo está ganando tiempo. Jobs dice muchas cosas interesantes en su “disclaimer” en contra del DRM, pero hay una que es particularmente reveladora: ¿por qué el 90% de la música que venden las majors la venden sin DRM (en los CDs) y la digital la tienen que “gravar”? Con el impacto que tiene esto en la coerción de la inovación en players, tiendas de música, nuevos moelos de negocio online, … y menos ventas de iPods, claro.

También particularmente brillante para sacarse de encima las acusaciones de “monopolio” y lo que es más importante, ejemplificador de la realidad del mercado musical digital, es este párrafo:

Today’s most popular iPod holds 1000 songs, and research tells us that the average iPod is nearly full. This means that only 22 out of 1000 songs, or under 3% of the music on the average iPod, is purchased from the iTunes store and protected with a DRM. The remaining 97% of the music is unprotected and playable on any player that can play the open formats. It’s hard to believe that just 3% of the music on the average iPod is enough to lock users into buying only iPods in the future. And since 97% of the music on the average iPod was not purchased from the iTunes store, iPod users are clearly not locked into the iTunes store to acquire their music.

Y la guinda final apelando a las autoridades europeas a cambiar el foco de ss ataques hacia las majors musicales, en su mayoría con capital europeo en estos momentos, tampoco tiene desperdicio:

Much of the concern over DRM systems has arisen in European countries. Perhaps those unhappy with the current situation should redirect their energies towards persuading the music companies to sell their music DRM-free. For Europeans, two and a half of the big four music companies are located right in their backyard. The largest, Universal, is 100% owned by Vivendi, a French company. EMI is a British company, and Sony BMG is 50% owned by Bertelsmann, a German company. Convincing them to license their music to Apple and others DRM-free will create a truly interoperable music marketplace. Apple will embrace this wholeheartedly.

Saca tu PC de su idle y para de buscar extraterrestres con Seti@home y ponte a ayudar a buscar a un desaparecido. Pablo Rodríguez, director científico de Telefónica I+D, ex senior researcher en los Research Labs de Microsoft y uno de mis compañeros de trabajo en la actualidad, me ha instado a participar en el rescate de un excompañero suyo en Microsoft desaparecido en el oceano hace unos días. Millares de voluntarios junto con Microsoft, Google, y Amazon están intentando localizar a Jim Gray,
un veterano y prestigioso investigador de Microsoft Research Labs que
salió el otro día en su velero y no ha vuelto. Su mujer denunció su
desaparición hace unos días. Se están utilizando al sistema del
almacenaje de S3 de Amazon y el Mechanical Turk de Amazon para hojear sobre millares de fotografías de satélite sobre el oceano intentando encontrar su barco.

La información de tal proceso de clasificación alimenta diversos algoritmos de Inteligencia artificial que dirijen la búsqueda por las imágenes. El mismo CTO de Amazon está implicado en el proceso.  Ayuda a buscar a Jim Gray.

During the last 5 days, Mechanical Turk workers looked at more than 560,000 images from 3 satellites, covering nearly 3,500 square miles of
ocean. A group of experts is currently reviewing the images that
workers identified, and sending their results to the appropriate
authorities.

Extreme Democracy: Peer to peer
